5G in horticulture: the next step towards the autonomous greenhouse?
The rollout of 5G mobile connections is getting closer and closer. In this (online) event from TomatoWorld, experts will discuss the impact this will have on companies in horticulture. About, among other things: data-driven cultivation, picking robots, smart track & trace and autonomous drones.
The future of growing is data driven
Tomatoworld's greenhouse is remotely controlled and totally data-driven. Many cameras and sensors hang in the greenhouse, collecting real-time data.
Tomatoworld as a showcase and field lab for data-driven growing
Tomatoworld is 12.5 years old and is looking optimistically to the future. This is why Tomatoworld has decided to transform its demonstration greenhouse into a field lab for data-driven growing in collaboration with Hoogendoorn Growth Management, LetsGrow.com and its other partners.
Enza Zaden rejoins Tomatoworld
Tomatoworld's greenhouse this year features 18 tomato varieties from Enza Zaden. They have rejoined the network of partners. Enza Zaden develops new vegetable varieties that are grown, sold and eaten all over the world. An independent family business, Enza Zaden has been in business for three generations.

IIVO
Hoogendoorn Growth Management has been a partner of Tomatoworld for many years. With the introduction of the new all-in-one process computer IIVO, it was decided to also install this advanced 'next level' climate computer at Tomatoworld.
Warm collaboration with Zhongnong Futong
Out of the warm collaboration with our partner. Zhongnong Futong, weekly Q&A sessions have emerged in which growers from our partner Zhongnong Futong are trained and advised on their growing strategy. As soon as we can travel again, growers will receive hands-on training in Tomatoworld's greenhouse.
New pipe rail trolleys from Berg Hortimotive
Tomatoworld can once again operate safely this new growing season. From the hands of Marco van der Velden, managing director Berg Hortimotive, we received two brand new Tube Rail scissor trolleys (S series Benomic). It's a nice gesture born out of the cooperation with Tomatoworld.
And how cool that the colours match Tomatoworld's house style so well. We are happy that we will soon be able to show our visitors the beautiful techniques we use from Dutch companies in the greenhouse sector.
Japanese delegation learns about solutions to revitalise horticulture sector at Tomatoworld.
On Thursday 16 January, Tomatoworld welcomed Japanese Ambassador Hidehisa Horinouchi with members from the Japanese First Chamber and the Ministry of Agriculture. They are working in Japan on the revitalisation of agriculture and horticulture and the reconstruction of northeast Japan after the 2011 tsunami. Mayor Bouke Arends was present on behalf of Westland. He emphasised that the municipality of Westland has had a good relationship with Japan and Kochi prefecture in particular for many years.

TOMATOWORLD GETS HEAT FROM NEIGHBOUR
Tomatoworld is artery-connected to its neighbour Kees Stijger for its heat supply at the beginning of December. Kees Stijger is one of 49 Westland companies that purchase geothermal heat from Trias Westland. By building a connecting pipeline, Tomatoworld's heat supply will be filled with 65% geothermal and 35% CHP heat. With the construction of this connection, Tomatoworld's gas connection will become redundant.

Koppert Biological Systems is number 2 in the 2019 Hillenraad 100! Rijk Zwaan was able to take home the trophy belonging to the leading position in the Hillenraad 500+ for the sixth time. In this outside category for companies with a turnover of more than €500 million or more than 1,000 employees in the Netherlands, Syngenta Seeds came 2nd.
Tomatoworld welcomes new Asian partner Cau Futong
A partnership agreement was signed on 24 October by education and information centre for greenhouse farming, Tomatoworld and Beijing-based Cau Futong.
Rotterdam to glasshouse horticulture during World Food Festival 2019
As part of the World Food Festival, group 8 of the Hildegardis School from Rotterdam came to Tomatoworld today for a lightning tour. Councillor Karin Zwinkels accompanied the children on their tour of Tomatoworld along the World Food Challenge, in the tomato greenhouse with 80 different tomato varieties and with the tomato tasting.

We have come a long way with the crop. Last week, the head was removed from the crop, with which we will realise the final setting this week. Despite the nice weather, we have to stay focused to achieve a good final result. The summer days demand a lot from the plants when it comes to maintaining the water balance. This also means for us that we have to make sure we give the plant the opportunity to do so.

Last week Querétaro, Mexico was the setting for the biggest Plant Empowerment seminar in Latin America so far. An overwhelming amount of 135 interested growers from all over Mexico gathered to hear about the principles of Growing by Plant Empowerment (GPE), that were explained by speakers from Plant Empowerment partners Hoogendoorn, LetsGrow.com, Koppert, Svensson and Cultilene. Saint-Gobain Cultilene (from Rijen NBr.) has recently partnered with Honselersdijk-based information and education centre Tomatoworld. Cultilene supplies Albarino horticultural glass, data-driven services and innovative substrate solutions that contribute to optimising water and energy consumption in the greenhouse.
First harvest hybrid exposure trial Tomato
September this year, new tomatoes were planted for the Hybrid Lighting Tomato project
at Delphy Improvement Centre. In this project, coarse vine tomatoes are grown under a combination of LED and SONT lighting. This week, the first tomatoes were harvested. The main variety is De Ruiter's Merlice. This is no coincidence, as Merlice is one of the strongest and most productive varieties under lights.

Tomatoworld has partnered on the "Do IoT for greenhouse horticulture" project. The "Do IoT for greenhouse horticulture" project accelerates digital innovations in South Holland for sustainable and efficient food production. The use of 5G, sensors and robots is central to the experiments.
