Rotterdam to glasshouse horticulture during World Food Festival 2019

As part of the World Food Festival, group 8 of the Hildegardis School from Rotterdam came to Tomatoworld today for a lightning tour. Councillor Karin Zwinkels accompanied the children on their tour of Tomatoworld along the World Food Challenge, in the tomato greenhouse with 80 different tomato varieties and with the tomato tasting.

Learning and experiencing
Friday 11 October is dedicated to 'food industry meets education'. Several schools will visit companies in the Westland and Hoeksche Waard regions to learn and experience where food comes from. Especially children in big cities hardly know where their (fresh) food comes from. Glastuinbouw Nederland and the Municipality of Westland also see it as their task to propagate the sector's sustainable story to consumers.

Where do those vegetables come from
The intended main target group is the younger inhabitants of Rotterdam; primary school pupils and their parents who can gain knowledge on Friday and Saturday during the guided tour at Tomatoworld and during the three-day World Food Festival from 11 to 13 October on and around the Binnenrotte in Rotterdam. Together with the municipality of Westland (and with support from Greenport West-Holland), a greenhouse will be built there, where city residents can experience the special character of greenhouse horticulture and 'tap' Greenco s Tommies tomatoes! A crowd puller on Sunday will also be the lunch table decorated decoratively with Tomatoworld's tomato worldmixes. During this part of the programme, food will be cooked with the finest produce from the region, striving to create no waste.
